Bio
Akua Gyamfi has over 20 years of experience in the entertainment industry, with a career spanning fashion, film, television, theatre, print, and online media. Her career started out as a hairdresser in Ladbroke Grove, her skills leading her to work on fashion shows, music videos, and film sets.
Leaving hair to work in media, Akua studied Journalism at London College of Communication, she then went on to work at music station Channel AKA, then joined the BBC and worked in the following departments - BBC Performing Arts Fund, BBC Writersroom, BBC R&D, BBC Radio London, BBC Radio 1Xtra.
In 2010 Akua worked with director Mark 1 to co-write, and produce anti-knife and gun crime short film, After Effects. During this time, she gained valuable insight into the machinations of scriptwriting and turned those skills into becoming a script consultant for new screenwriters & playwrights, with some of those scripted productions going on to win awards.
In 2012 Akua founded The British Blacklist a platform that celebrates the talents of British Black creatives across Screen, Stage, Literature, and Sound. She also produces podcasts Your Aunties Could Never (popular culture, and TBB Talks (interviews with Black creatives from around the globe).
Alongside writer/producer Leon Mayne, Akua is the co-creator/co-exec producer and host of industry round table YouTube & Podcast series The Circle.
In 2019 Akua joined forces with Soul Film, The New Black Film Collective, and We Are Parable to launch S.O.U.L. Film Fest, an annual event that showcases the best of Black filmmakers and content creators from the UK and the wider Diaspora.
